  • Q: What is Adaptive Management?

A: It's a method for managing a complex, changing ecosystem. The basic idea is learning through experimentation. We choose the goals we want to achieve and take our best shot at them. Then we measure our progress, adjust the management efforts to do a better job, and try again.

  • Q: Why do we need adaptive management in the Grand Canyon?
  • Q: Who makes the decisions about Glen Canyon Dam operations?

A: The final decisions lie with the Secretary of the Interior. The Adaptive Management Work Group (AMWG), advises the Secretary. AMWG works with a Technical Work Group (TWG), scientists from the Glen Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC), and a group of science advisers. And in the end, all decisions must be consistent and in line with the Law of the River.

  • Q: How did adaptive management get started in the Grand Canyon?

Q: Instead of HFE's, is it possible to produce bigger sandbars by strategically using helicopters to drop sand at key locations?
