Steve graduated from Humboldt State University in 1977, after which he began his career in conservation of imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend. After working for a number of state and federal agencies (U.S. BLM, Forest Service), he began his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1989. His prior FWS positions include working as a staff biologist in the Sacramento, California Field Office, followed by eight years as the Southwest Region's Endangered Species Listing Coordinator. He has been the Arizona Ecological Services Field Supervisor since September, 2002.
