Mr. Reeder has guided on the Colorado River in both Grand Canyon and Cataract Canyon for 13 years. He graduated with a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Western State University in Gunnison, Colorado. There he focused his studies on the Colorado River, with specific courses on the river, Colorado River water law, and general instruction in science, ethics, and philosophy. In 2002 he earned an M.A. in Environmental Humanities from the University of Utah. His thesis, “The Colorado River Beyond Resource,” describes his personal experience as a third-generation Grand Canyon boatman with the conflicts of managing a river in the interests of both human and non-human species. For this work he interviewed David Wegner, Jack Schmidt, Martha Hahn, and former Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Steve Martin to gain a deeper understanding of the intersection between humanity and the natural world. Since completing his master’s degree, Reeder continues to guide and serves on the Board of Directors for Grand Canyon River Guides, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting Grand Canyon and the Colorado River experiences. He currently serves as vice president/president elect.
